Mask failure

Incident Date

2024-08-04

Incident Description

Shortly after entering the water, a mask leak was identified. When clearing the mask, it felt oddly flexible around the left lens. Whilst pressing with a thumb to test the security of the left lens, it fell out. The dive was aborted and an exit made up the entry slope without use of a mask. The mask frame broke where previously a small crack had been noticed.

Lessons Learned

Do not continue to use equipment with known faults. Carrying a spare mask would have provided additional exit options. Another diver was waiting at the bottom of the entrance slope; their assistance may have been useful had the failure occurred further into the cave.
