CDG Central Committee & Sections

About the Central Committee

The CDG Central Committee oversees the national organisation of the Cave Diving Group and supports the work of its four regional sections across Britain.

The Cave Diving Group operates through a federal structure, with sections based in the major caving regions of the country: Somerset, Welsh, Derbyshire, and Northern. Each section manages local activities through its own officers, including a Secretary, Treasurer, and Training Officer.

The CDG Central Committee provides coordination between these sections and represents the Group nationally. It consists of national officers who help guide the organisation, maintain communication between sections, and liaise with external bodies.

Regional CDG Sections

The four CDG sections support cave diving activity within their respective areas:

• Somerset Section
• Welsh Section
• Derbyshire Section
• Northern Section

Each section provides local support for training, exploration, meetings, and member activities.

Northern Section

Northern Section members are actively involved in cave exploration, not only in the North of England but internationally.

The Section has strong ties to northern caving clubs including (among others) the Bradford Pothole Club, Northern Pennine, Red Rose, Craven and YSS, as well as the CRO and is, in its own right, a full club member of the CNCC.

Being active with one of these caving clubs is an ideal way to meet Northern Section members. Successful applications for membership of the Northern Section will come from competent and active cavers who are known within the Northern caving community.

Derbyshire Section

We are the Derbyshire Section. We go diving. Sometimes in Derbyshire, sometimes not. Come to a meeting.

Welsh Section

The majority of Welsh Section members are drawn from South Wales Caving Club, however other clubs with strong ties to the Section include Chelsea Speleological Society, Croydon Caving Club , Hereford Caving Club  and Morgannwg Caving Club  , amongst others. The Section is a member of the Cambrian Caving Council and encourages its divers to become involved with South and Mid Wales Cave Rescue.

Being active with one of the above caving clubs is an ideal way to meet Welsh Section members. Successful applications for membership of the Welsh Section will typically come from cavers who can demonstrate that they are active in South Wales. The Section has a quarterly formal meeting, often with a diving/training event arranged for the same weekend.

Somerset Section

The CDG’s origins can be traced back to the 1930s in the Mendip hills of England where the first recorded cave dive was made in Wookey Hole.

The Somerset Section of the CDG welcome prospective members & hold meeting’s every 2 months with organised caving/cave diving group activities held during the day. Members typically belong to the following Mendip based caving clubs: The Wessex Caving Club , Bristol Exploration Club, Shepton Mallet Caving Club  & are active in cave exploration both in the UK & Europe. Successful applications for membership of the Somerset Section will come from competent and active cavers.
