Lost line x 2
Incident Date
2002-03-01
Incident Description
1014944461 Diver A was passing diver B in the large passage whilst diving into Daren Cilau with equipment. After a while A realised hed not seen the line for a while and sat on a rock to await diver B behind. Vis. 2 m (typical for this sump). B was surprised to see A waiting off line. Diver A carried no search reel. 1201827661 Diver A was surveying the sump when he became separated from the line (which was in an undercut) whilst writing notes on his slate. The survey notes were used to align the divers compass and re-unite him with the line. A search reel was carried but not deployed. In both cases the divers involved had very ample gas margins due to the activities being undertaken.
Lessons Learned
The two incidents illustrate alternative means of relocating a lost line without a standard search using a safety reel. They also illustrate the ease which a lost line may occur when the diver is preoccupied doing other tasks.
