Failed Dive Computer
Incident Date
2001-05-06
Incident Description
I dived for about ten minutes to a distance of about 50m - upstream progress in Ilam Main Rising is slow. When I looked at my computer which had been reading normally it informed me that I was at -29.2m and had 92 minutes decompression. As this was patent balderdash and I had a dive-timer decompression tables and 7.7L cylinders that would not permit a dive of sufficient depth/duration to require decompression at a site which I know well I continued. On my return I did an extended safety stop and surfaced with the computer still claiming that I was at -29.2m and had 92 minutes decompression; it did not give an alarm signal.
Lessons Learned
Redundancy of instruments can be as important as of cylinders/valves. Familiarity with a dive sitewhether acquired from previous dives or by other meanshelps dealing with some incidents. A less obvious fault with the computer might not have been noticed and could have led a a more serious outcome.
