Description

The Welsh Sump Index records known sumps, resurgences, sinks, and flooded mines across Wales. It provides a valuable record of cave diving exploration and is an important reference for Cave Diving Group members, cavers, researchers, and anyone interested in the underground landscapes of Wales.

The history of the Welsh Sump Index began in November 1966. Mel Davies published Cave Sump Index: South Wales, bringing together the known flooded caves, resurgences, and sinks of South Wales in a single reference.

In 1986, John Adams and Dave Morris expanded the publication. They added North Wales and several flooded mines, creating a much broader record of Welsh cave diving.

This edition builds on their work. It includes information from the Cave Diving Group Newsletter, other published sources, and contributions from individual cave divers. Together, these updates provide the most complete record possible at the time of publication.

Cave exploration never stands still. Divers continue to discover new passages, revisit old sites, and improve surveys. As a result, some information in the Welsh Sump Index may become outdated over time. The book should therefore be viewed as a snapshot of current knowledge rather than a final record.

Other Sump Index Books

The Cave Diving Group also publishes the Northern Sump Index and the Somerset Sump Index, these books document decades of cave diving exploration throughout Britain and preserve an important part of the country’s underground heritage.
